New year, my dear

Well, what do you know. It’s the beginning of a new year already. New year, new mistakes, new accomplishments and successes. Last year was a bit of a whirlwind for us, things were happening faster than we could reflect on. That’s what you get when you live with my mom, she’s all about striving. The pack is here to remind her that she also has to enjoy the results from time to time. Always looking to evolve is a nice way of thinking, sure, but there’s no time like the present, as we dogs like to say.

Dad just turned 31 and seems happy with that. They had cake at grandma’s (thanks a mill for that, BTW) and went to My Dog, a big dog show in Gothenburg. From what I understand it was quite the disappointment, but where there are dogs there will also be my folks, it’s some sort of physics law. It can’t be disrupted.

So what’s new? Well, 2 more pack members, how’s that! There’s tiny chihuahua Sylvester, who originally came here for extensive rehab and was set to be rehomed. Somehow the little joker made his way into the pack’s inner circle and stuck around. He’s cool, I’ll give him that. He’s confident with other dogs and paves his own way, but he still doesn’t trust other people besides mom. He’s getting better and has a major breakthrough now and again, but they’ve got their work cut out for them with this one, I’ll tell you that. Broken trust is hard to fix, at least when it’s that broke…

…wich brings me to my new sister, Correia. Correia is a Rafeiro do Alentejo (Rafeiro Alentejano), an LGD, just like Alfie. Correia had been starved and probably abused and both issues are a work in progress. Slowly but surely she’s gaining weight and confidence. At the moment she’s way better indoors than outdoors, and tends to flee when it’s an option. However, I will say she’s making great progress and is starting to make contact with mom and dad. Her rehab had to wait because they had to deal with other urgent cases, but the pack made sure she felt welcome in the meantime :). Actually, Alfie showed no love for her in the beginning, and neither did she. That’s when we knew they’d be great together! Powerful dogs may need more time to settle the hierarchy, but once it’s done they’re inseparable. Alfie needed company while out in the yard and since none of us can stand the cold, Correia felt like the obvious choice. Now he’s no longer bored while performing his duty and Correia has the best private tutor ever.

Mom has started to help out in her friend’s pet supply shop and I’ve had the privilege to come along a few times. I like it there, but only after it’s closed. That’s when I get to roam around in the store and shoplift. Okay, so I don’t exactly get to do those things, but you can’t blame a guy for trying, right? Anyway, mom’s happy about the job since it’s an opportunity for her to spread the word about our business and help people with their dogs. Also, it’s cool to get a discount on her favorite shopping items; dog stuff!

2012 ment many new friends for us, both 2 and 4-legged. This year we strive to make even more, but I promise I’ll keep us in the moment while doing it. I may let my momma glance to the future, but her feet are still here on the ground with mine.
